Modern Dance

Modern dance appeared in Germany and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Modern dance is often seen as a rejection or rebellion against classical ballet. Socio-economic and cultural factors contributed to its development. In the late 19th century, dance artists such as Isadora Duncan, Maud Allan and Loie Fuller pioneered new forms and practices in what is now called aesthetics or free dance for performance. These dancers ignored the strict ballet movement vocabulary, the specific and limited range of movements deemed appropriate for ballet and stopped wearing corsets and pointe shoes in search of greater freedom of movement.
