The Importance of Communication
Communication is a process or activity of delivering messages from one person to another to achieve certain goals. Communication is a prerequisite for human life. Human life will appear empty if there is no communication. Because without communication, interaction between people, whether individually, in groups or organizations, would not be possible. Two people are said to be interacting if each takes action and reaction. Actions and reactions are carried out by humans either as individuals, groups or organizations.
As social beings, we cannot avoid the act
of communicating and receiving messages from and to others. This act of
communication continues throughout the life process. The process takes place in
various contexts, both physical, psychological, and social, because the
communication process does not occur in an empty space. The actors of the
communication process are humans who are always moving dynamically.
Why is it important? Communication becomes
important because of the function that can be felt by the actors of the
communication. Through communication, a person conveys what is on his mind,
mind and feelings of conscience to others, either directly or indirectly.
Through communication, a person can make himself not feel isolated or isolated
from the environment around him.
What if there is no good communication?
Poor communication has a bad effect, causes
miscommunication or misunderstanding, causes misinformation, gives a negative impression,
triggers conflict / disputes, dissolves social relationships, and triggers continuous
conflict
How to improve communication skill
1. Pay attention to non-verbal communication.
Body language can imply that you understand what people are saying, through how you see, hear, move, and react to the people around you can mean something more than just words.
2. Find the best way to communicate.
Everyone has different choices of how to communicate, for example, there are people who prefer to communicate by sending email, but others prefer to pick up the phone and talk, send short messages, even use social media sites or instant messages to convey something. Understand the person you are trying to contact and use the method they are used to, for example if you call someone several times and are always on voicemail, but the person is actually always quick to respond via email, then switch to email instead.
3. Pay attention to tone of voice.
The problem that occurs if we are accustomed to using email or social media sites is very difficult to understand someone's tone of voice. It's easy to understand pushy or angry sentences, so avoid using exclamation points in emails and if you are angry or upset it is best to take a few minutes to cool off before replying. If possible meet in person to avoid misunderstanding.
4. Pay attention to grammar.
Always correct whatever you type, if you are not good at detecting errors, use a spell check or have someone proofread your email.
5. Review what you hear.
Don't forget to review what your colleague or boss said by focusing on the important points of what they said, this will give both parties an opportunity to clarify if there is confusion.
6. Last, never stop to improve.
Effective communication is
about skills that must be practiced constantly. Observing how others respond to
your way of communicating as a clue for improvement.
